Balance and Fall prevention
The capacity to keep balance gets more difficult as we age. Many factors play a role in maintaining proper balance; some are biological, while others may be altered and improved. Because loss of balance is the primary cause of falls, which often result in catastrophic injuries, balance and stability are crucial characteristics for ageing persons to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Physiotherapy is an important part of a patient's healthcare team since it can help avoid falls and injuries, as well as identify people who are at risk of falling.
Balance Physiotherapy: How Can It Help?
Physiotherapy can help patients identify and manage risk factors that put them at risk of falling or injuries from falls, as well as treat a variety of disorders connected to pain caused by falls. We analyze and manage pharmaceutical side effects, weakness, vitamin deficiency, poor vision, discomfort, footwear, home environment, and balance with our patients. The majority of falls are caused by a combination of these risk factors, many of which can be addressed as part of our Balance and Fall Prevention Physiotherapy programme.
The following are some examples of rehabilitation strategies:
-
Therapeutic exercise to improve strength
-
Balance and vestibular function can be improved by balance-specific training.
-
Assessments of home safety include recommendations for removing throw rugs, installing grab bars, and installing handrails.
-
Patient education on the use of canes and walkers, as well as footwear and supportive devices.
By screening our patients for risk factors, regardless of fall history, and assessing strength, balance, vision, gait pattern, and reviewing medications and home environment, our Physiotherapist may be able to identify those at risk for falls even before they fall and implement different balance exercises and other strategies to reduce those risks.
