Understanding Lymphedema in Breast Cancer

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged — most commonly as a side effect of breast cancer treatment such as surgery, radiation, or lymph node removal. It causes swelling, heaviness, and discomfort, usually in the arm, hand, or chest.

At Lymphedema Management & Breast Cancer, we use Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), specialized massage, compression garments, and gentle exercise to manage swelling and restore quality of life.

You don't have to manage this alone. Our certified lymphedema therapists are here to guide you through every stage — from diagnosis to long-term maintenance.

You do not have to just live with it. Lymphedema is a recognized medical condition with effective treatments available. The sooner you seek care, the better the outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is treatment safe during active breast cancer treatment? +
Yes. Lymphedema therapy and gentle rehabilitation are safe during chemotherapy and radiation when tailored appropriately. Our therapists coordinate with your oncology team to ensure treatment aligns with your current phase of care.
How many sessions will I need? +
This depends on your lymphedema stage and symptoms. Many patients see significant improvement within 10–20 CDT sessions. Maintenance therapy is then ongoing. Your therapist will give you a clear estimate after the first assessment.
Will my insurance cover lymphedema therapy? +
Most extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy, which includes CDT. Some plans also cover compression garments. We offer direct billing and can help you verify your coverage before your first appointment.
It's been years since my surgery — is it too late? +
Not at all. Lymphedema can develop months or even years after surgery or radiation. We routinely help patients years post-treatment achieve meaningful reduction in symptoms and improved daily function.
Do I need a doctor's referral? +
In most cases, no referral is required to begin physiotherapy-based lymphedema treatment. However, some insurance plans may require one for full reimbursement. Call us and we'll help clarify what you need.
I feel embarrassed about my symptoms. What can I expect? +
Our team works with breast cancer and lymphedema concerns every single day. Nothing you share will surprise or embarrass us. We approach every appointment with deep empathy, respect, and zero judgment. You are safe here.
